The saxophone studio at West Virginia University offers a comprehensive curriculum for students to be trained in music performance and music education for undergraduate, graduate, and doctorals saxophonists. The saxophone studio is typically between fifteen and twenty students, allowing each student a weekly lesson.
Students in the saxophone studio at West Virginia University have the opportunity to participate in several ensembles. The ensembles available to saxophonists at WVU are:
> The West Virginia University Marching Band*
> One of three concert bands: The WVU Wind ensemble, the WVU Symphonic Band, and the WVU Concert Band±
> The Chamber Winds Ensemble+
> The WVU Symphony Orchestra+
> Various Jazz ensembles including large jazz ensembles and jazz combos
> World Music ensembles including the Brazilian ensemble and the Salsa ensemble
> Saxophone Quartet
In addition to weekly lessons, a weekly studio class is held. This gives the students the opportunity to perform repertoire for an audience of their peers in order to gain performance experience and to receive constructive criticism. This is also a class where students can discuss topics relating to the saxophone, music performance and education, and other aspects of pursuing a career in music.
For undergraduate students West Virginia University offers the following degree programs: Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, and a Music Minor. Students in the Bachelor of Music programs can choose from one of the following areas of concentration: music education, combined music performance/music education program, music performance, jazz studies, and music composition.
WVU offers graduate programs on the masters and doctoral level. The masters level degrees offered are as follows: master of music in which the student can choose performance, music education, music composition, music theory or music history as areas of concentration. There is also a specialized master of music in music education. In this program the student can choose one of four options of course work.
Doctoral students may choose between the Doctor of Music arts degree in which the student can choose as their major area of study performance and literature or music composition. WVU also offers a doctor of philosophy, Ph. D., in music education.
